The Nigerian Army has detained Lance Corporal Ahmed Aminu following the fatal assault of a mobile phone technician, Alkasim Ibrahim, in Mayo-Belwa, Adamawa State.
The victim reportedly died from injuries sustained during the altercation on Friday evening.
In an official statement, Lieutenant Adebayo Adewumi, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 23 Armoured Brigade in Yola, confirmed that Aminu has been taken into custody.
The army has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the incident.“The Nigerian Army acknowledges the reported incident with deep concern and wishes to inform the public that the said soldier has since been taken into custody.
A thorough investigation has been initiated to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.”
The statement emphasized the army’s unwavering commitment to professionalism and discipline and assured that the case would not be concealed:
“The Nigerian Army assures the public that the outcome of the investigation will be made public to ensure transparency, accountability, and justice.”
Authorities have appealed for calm, urging citizens to refrain from speculation or disruptive actions, and reiterated the army’s core values of integrity and national service.
News of the incident has sparked widespread outrage. Human rights advocates and local community leaders have condemned what they describe as a “shocking abuse of power”, calling for a fair and transparent judicial process.
Witness statements and media reports allege Aminu attacked Ibrahim after an argument over a delayed phone repair for his girlfriend, leaving the technician unconscious and later deceased.
One onlooker described the tragedy: “The boy was just hustling… His only ‘crime’ was not fixing a phone on time. And now, he’s dead.”
The Nigerian Army has committed to thoroughly investigating the incident, with findings to be released upon completion.
Meanwhile, the police have been notified and are collaborating to determine whether the case should be escalated to civilian court.
