Nigerian-born British boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, was on Monday morning involved in a fatal road accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, near Sagamu, Ogun State.

Eyewitnesses said the crash occurred shortly after 11 a.m. along the busy highway, near Danco Filling Station in Makun, before the Sagamu Interchange, inward the Ibadan axis.

According to a report by The Punch, the vehicle conveying Joshua, a Lexus SUV with registration number KRD 850 HN, collided with a stationary truck under circumstances that are yet to be determined.

Joshua was said to have sustained minor injuries, while two occupants of the Lexus reportedly died on the spot.

An eyewitness, who spoke at the scene, disclosed that the convoy comprised two vehicles, a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV, with Joshua seated in the back seat of the Lexus.

“It was a two-vehicle convoy. Anthony Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another passenger beside him. There was also a passenger sitting beside the driver, making four occupants in the Lexus. His security personnel were in the vehicle behind them,” the eyewitness said.

The eyewitness added that passersby immediately mobilised to rescue survivors and alert oncoming motorists before officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrived at the scene.

“Other eyewitnesses and I started the rescue efforts and flagged down vehicles for help. FRSC officials arrived a few minutes later,” he said.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the accident as investigations continue.
