Lagos Grants Three-Month Rebate for Faded Number Plates

Vehicle owners, commercial transporters and fleet operators in Lagos now have a financial breather, as the state government has approved a three-month rebate window for the replacement of faded and unreadable vehicle number plates, in a move aimed at strengthening road safety and security while easing compliance costs.

The Lagos State Government said the initiative is designed to encourage motorists to voluntarily replace worn-out plates without the pressure of immediate enforcement, while also improving vehicle identification across the state.

The approval, granted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), Mr. Rasheed Muri-Okunola, who described the rebate as a proactive and citizen-friendly intervention.

According to Muri-Okunola, the condition of vehicle number plates plays a critical role in traffic management, crime detection and overall public safety, noting that faded or illegible plates often hinder law enforcement operations and traffic monitoring.

“Clear and properly maintained number plates are essential for vehicle identification and security. This three-month rebate is designed to give motorists ample opportunity to replace faded plates at a reduced cost, while supporting our collective responsibility to keep Lagos roads safe and well-regulated,” he said.

He explained that the rebate applies specifically to vehicle owners whose number plates have become worn, faded or unclear over time due to prolonged use and weather exposure. Motorists are advised to visit the MVAA One-Stop Centre at Oshodi or any MVAA station across the state to process replacements during the rebate period.

The permanent secretary stressed that the initiative aligns with the state government’s policy of balancing enforcement with empathy, adding that incentives are being prioritised to promote compliance rather than penalties.

Beyond aesthetics, Muri-Okunola noted that legible number plates are vital to curbing traffic violations, supporting investigations and enhancing the effectiveness of the state’s digital vehicle tracking and security systems.

“This is not just a regulatory exercise; it is a public safety measure. When number plates are clear and standardised, it improves efficiency across transportation, security and emergency response systems,” he added.

He assured motorists of smooth service delivery throughout the rebate window and cautioned against patronising unauthorised agents, emphasising that all number plate replacements must be carried out at government-approved centres.

Muri-Okunola reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to policies that promote safety, convenience and accountability, while urging residents and transport operators to cooperate in building a safer and more orderly transport environment.
