The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed that two people died and another two sustained serious injuries in two separate accidents that occurred in the early hours of Monday, December 8, 2025, along the Otedola Bridge axis of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway and the Third Mainland Bridge.
According to LASTMA, two persons died instantly at about 2:30 a.m. when an unregistered vehicle, travelling at high speed, rammed into a moving trailer on Otedola Bridge inward Berger. The trailer driver reportedly fled the scene with the vehicle immediately after the crash.
Taofiq Adebayo, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, said officers of the agency’s 24-hour Night-Gang Team responded promptly, safely evacuated the victims from the road, and removed the wreckage to prevent secondary accidents. He added that police officers from the Isheri Division and personnel from the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) also provided support at the scene.
In a separate incident around 5:00 a.m., an empty tanker collided with a pure-water distribution van (SMK 67 XH) near the UNILAG waterfront on the Third Mainland Bridge. Two victims sustained serious injuries and received first aid from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) before being taken to a hospital for further treatment.
Adebayo said LASTMA officers maintained steady traffic control across both corridors despite the incidents to ensure motorists’ safety and prevent further hazards.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki extended condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the Otedola crash as a “tragic and avoidable loss” caused by reckless speeding and disregard for traffic rules. He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to enforcing speed limits and sustaining round-the-clock surveillance and rapid-response operations across Lagos.
