Fourteen victims kidnapped by sea pirates along the Calabar–Oron waterways have been rescued following intelligence-driven operations by joint operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The victims were freed after what authorities described as sustained surveillance, coordinated tactical deployments, and precise targeting of criminal hideouts within the maritime corridor.
Confirming the development, the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, said the operation was executed based on credible intelligence and inter-agency synergy.
“This successful rescue underscores the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and the strength of inter-agency collaboration in tackling emerging security threats,” he said.
Placid noted that operatives intensified surveillance across identified flashpoints before launching targeted operations that led to the safe recovery of all 14 victims without casualties.
“Acting on credible intelligence, our joint teams strategically combed the affected waterways and adjoining creeks, applying both operational precision and restraint, which ultimately ensured that all victims were rescued unharmed,” he added.
The police spokesperson described the outcome as a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating along Nigeria’s waterways.
“This operation sends a clear message to criminal elements that there will be no safe haven for acts of piracy, kidnapping, or any form of organised crime within our maritime domain,” he said.
According to him, the rescued individuals are currently receiving medical attention and undergoing debriefing procedures, after which they will be reunited with their families.
“The victims are presently undergoing medical evaluation and necessary profiling. Arrangements are being made for their safe reunion with their loved ones,” Placid stated.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, commended the operatives involved in the mission, describing the outcome as a testament to professionalism, courage, and coordinated security efforts.
“The IGP has applauded the dedication and synergy demonstrated by the operatives, noting that such collaboration remains critical in addressing complex and evolving security challenges,” Placid said.
He further assured that efforts are ongoing to apprehend those responsible for the abduction.
“We are actively pursuing all individuals and groups linked to this criminal act. The Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with sister agencies, will ensure that the perpetrators are identified, apprehended, and brought to justice,” he affirmed.
Reiterating the Force’s commitment to public safety, the police urged citizens, especially those operating within riverine and coastal areas, to remain vigilant and support security agencies with timely information.
“We call on members of the public to continue to partner with law enforcement agencies by providing actionable intelligence that will aid ongoing operations,” he said. The latest rescue highlights renewed efforts by security agencies to curb piracy and kidnapping activities along strategic waterways, particularly in the Calabar–Oron axis, which has witnessed sporadic security concerns in recent times.
