In a decisive move to curb crime and strengthen public safety, the Ogun State Police Command, in synergy with sister security agencies and local stakeholders, has arrested 146 suspects during a coordinated operation tagged “Operation Keep Sagamu Safe” in Sagamu.
The large-scale operation, described as intelligence-driven and preventive in approach, was carried out in the early hours of April 13, 2026, targeting identified criminal flashpoints across Sagamu and its environs.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the operation followed a series of strategic engagements with traditional rulers, the Sagamu Local Government Council, and heads of security agencies, all aimed at strengthening a unified security architecture in the area.
“The operation was not arbitrary; it was the outcome of deliberate intelligence gathering and sustained consultations with critical stakeholders within Sagamu. Our objective is clear – to proactively deny criminal elements the space to operate and to reassure law-abiding residents of their safety,” Babaseyi stated.
He emphasized that the exercise was designed to forestall any breakdown of law and order, noting that the Command remains committed to proactive policing rather than reactive responses to crime.
“This is a preventive strategy. We are staying ahead of crime by identifying threats early and neutralizing them through coordinated actions. Sagamu residents can be assured that their safety remains our top priority,” he added.
The operation saw active participation from multiple security outfits, including the Nigeria Police Force, the military, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Amotekun Corps, the Ogun State Community Security (So-Safe) Corps, and the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), reflecting what the Command described as a “robust and unified security response.”
Babaseyi commended the level of cooperation among the agencies, describing it as a model for effective community policing and inter-agency synergy.
“The success recorded in this operation underscores the power of collaboration. No single agency can do it alone. What we have demonstrated here is a seamless partnership driven by a shared commitment to public safety,” he said.
Providing an update on the status of those arrested, the police spokesman disclosed that the suspects are currently undergoing screening to determine their level of involvement in criminal activities.
“All suspects are being profiled and screened in line with due process. Those found culpable will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Abeokuta for discreet investigation and subsequent prosecution,” he noted.
He further issued a strong warning to criminal elements operating within the state, stressing that the Command would sustain the tempo of intelligence-led operations.
“Let it be clearly understood that Ogun State is not a safe haven for criminality. We will continue to deploy every lawful means to track, apprehend, and prosecute offenders. There will be no hiding place for those who threaten public peace,” Babaseyi warned.
The Command also called on residents to remain vigilant and continue to support security agencies with credible information.
“Security is a collective responsibility. We urge members of the public to remain alert and report suspicious activities promptly. Timely information remains one of our most potent tools in crime prevention,” he said.
