A man survived the Air India crash that killed at least 200 people, a police chief has said.
Initially, authorities ruled out survivors among the over 200 passengers and crew aboard an Air India plane that crashed near a major international airport in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, the city’s police commissioner disclosed on Thursday.
The aircraft, Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, operating as flight AI 171 from Ahmedabad to London, crashed into a doctors’ hostel belonging to a medical college at around 1:30 p.m local time, triggering a massive fire and chaotic scenes in the densely populated area.
Sources said the plane crashed minutes after takeoff, leaving little chance for survivors among the 242 passengers and crew on board.
“It appears there are no survivors in the plane crash,” G.S. Malik, police commissioner for Ahmedabad told journalists, adding that “some locals would have also died” when the plane crashed into a residential area where offices were also located.
The lone survivor is a man who was in seat 11A on the flight.
