2025 World Population Day: LASG, UNFPA Urge Greater Investment in Youth Empowerment, Reproductive Rights

The Lagos State Government, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and other development partners, has renewed calls for increased investment in youth empowerment as part of efforts to address reproductive health, economic opportunity, and social inclusion.

The call was made during the commemoration of the 2025 World Population Day, marked annually on July 11, at an event organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, held at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Alausa.

This year’s theme, “Empowering Young People to Create the Families They Want in a Fair and Hopeful World,” highlights the critical role of young people in building sustainable societies.

Delivering the keynote address, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Olayinka Ojo, described youth as vital drivers of innovation and development.

Represented by the Director, Development Partners Department, Mr. Mobolaji Onimole, she noted: “A youthful population presents a unique opportunity for economic transformation if their potentials are properly harnessed. Governor Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus agenda reflects this priority by expanding youth inclusion and social development.”

Speaking on behalf of UNFPA, Ms. Abigail Msemburi, Head of the Lagos Office, raised concerns about the growing economic and social barriers that prevent many young people from starting families.

“The fertility crisis we face is not about choosing career over family; it’s about poverty, lack of access to healthcare, and unaffordable childcare limiting people’s options,” she said. Msemburi emphasized the need for comprehensive sexuality education, family-friendly policies, youth employment, and access to affordable reproductive health services.

“Nearly half of Lagos’ population is made up of young people. They must be empowered to make informed choices and shape their own futures,” she added.

Adding further context, former UNFPA Lagos Head, Dr. Omosehin Omolaso, pointed to global instability, economic uncertainty, and shifting societal norms as major factors influencing youth decisions on marriage and parenthood.

“Recent data shows that one in five young adults cite global instability as a deterrent to having children, while nearly 40% highlight financial hardship as a major obstacle,” he stated. He urged government and stakeholders to adopt inclusive policies that promote reproductive rights, access to housing, and mentorship.

Other participants, including representatives of the National Population Commission, Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, the NYCN Lagos Chapter, and LACSOP, collectively called for strengthened investment in education, healthcare, and job creation as the foundation for a resilient and inclusive future.
