The Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the welfare of its workforce through sustained investments in healthcare, insurance, and support systems designed to safeguard the well-being of public servants both in life and beyond.
This assurance was given by the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, Mr. Kayode Robert, during the presentation of insurance benefits to families of deceased staff from the Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the Local Government Service.
The event took place at the Ministry’s T Block Conference Room, Alausa, Ikeja.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Commissioner described the occasion as a solemn moment to honour the memory of dedicated staff who served Lagos State with diligence before their passing.
“Today is a moment to honour our late heroes—individuals who gave their best in service to Lagos State. This symbolic gesture is a testament to our appreciation and continued support for the families they left behind,” Robert said.
He disclosed that a total of 131 deceased staff would benefit from the insurance payout—80 from the Local Government Service, amounting to ₦288,753,779.40, and 51 from SUBEB, with ₦245,946,945.20—bringing the total disbursement to ₦533,700,724.73.
Robert urged the beneficiaries to use the funds prudently in honour of their loved ones, while encouraging active workers to take advantage of the State’s health insurance and wellness schemes.
“The well-being of our workforce remains a top priority for the Sanwo-Olu administration. We will continue to ensure that every public servant feels valued in life and remembered in death,” he added.
In her remarks, Mrs. Taibat Olona, Director of Pensions at SUBEB, who represented the Board Chairman, Hon. Akeem Babatunde Shittu, said the initiative aims to ease the financial burden of families who lost their breadwinners.
She urged beneficiaries to immediately process other entitlements such as pensions through their designated Pension Desk Officers.
Also speaking, Mr. Muyiwa Anwoju, representing the Managing Director of LASACO Assurance Plc, expressed the company’s continued commitment to the scheme, noting that over ₦4 billion has been disbursed since 2017, a testament to the sustainability and impact of the initiative.
Engr. Abdullahi Olowa, Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government and Chairman, Conference 57, lauded Governor Sanwo-Olu for prioritizing workers’ welfare.
He particularly commended the prompt payment of insurance claims to families of four recently deceased female councillors, just three months after their passing, describing it as proof that “the system is working effectively.”
He further praised the Ministry and insurance partners—LASACO Assurance Plc and Haggai Assurance Plc—for their strategic collaboration, while urging families to manage the funds responsibly.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. Folorunsho Dauda expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Lagos State Government for its compassion and continued support during their period of grief.
“This gesture shows that the Lagos State Government truly values its workers, even after their passing. We remain deeply thankful,” he said.
