The Ogun State Police Command has foiled a night robbery operation in Ota, neutralising one suspect and recovering two vehicles, a locally made pistol, ammunition and a cache of suspected stolen property.
The incident occurred in Ijaba, Iyesi, Ota, in the early hours of Sunday, November 1, following a distress call from a concerned resident.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Oluwaseyi Babaseyi, said in a statement on Sunday that operatives of the Onipanu Division, under the Ota Area Command, mobilised to the scene at about 1:45 a.m.
Babaseyi said the suspected robbers opened fire on sighting the police team, prompting an exchange of gunfire in which one suspect was killed, while other gang members escaped with suspected gunshot injuries.
He said, “A search of the scene led to the recovery of a Nissan Almera and a Toyota Camry, as well as several items suspected to have been stolen.”
The spokesman said the recovered property included HP and Dell laptops, a PlayStation console, four mobile phones, a Samsung television, a standing fan, a rechargeable radio, a Wi-Fi device, clothing, an OPay ATM card, a deck, two MP devices and other household items.
Babaseyi added that a Tecno mobile phone, three passport photographs, an MTN SIM pack, two National Identification Number (NIN) cards and cash were also recovered from the deceased suspect.
He said the police had intensified efforts to track down the fleeing gang members, particularly those who might have sustained gunshot injuries.
According to him, investigations were also ongoing to establish the ownership of the recovered vehicles and other exhibits and determine their possible links to other criminal activities.
The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, Bode Ojajuni, commended the operatives for their prompt response, professionalism and courage.
Babaseyi quoted the commissioner as reaffirming the command’s commitment to proactive, intelligence-led policing, sustained patrols and prompt responses to security concerns across the state.
The commissioner also urged residents to remain vigilant, promptly report suspicious movements and activities, and continue to support the police with credible information.
He assured residents that the command remained committed to protecting lives and property across Ogun State.
