The Lagos State Government has denied any involvement in the recent demolition of structures in FESTAC Town, clarifying that the exercise was not carried out by any of its agencies.
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, made this known on Tuesday at Alausa, Ikeja, while addressing reports linking the State Government to the demolition.
According to a statement issued by the Director, Public Affairs, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mukaila Sanusi, the Commissioner emphasised that Lagos State operates a transparent and well-defined process for all demolition activities, which includes the issuance of statutory notices and proper stakeholder engagement.
“Contrary to speculation, the Lagos State Government had no role in the demolitions carried out in FESTAC Town,”Sanusi quoted the Commissioner as saying.
He stressed that the government remains committed to fairness, due process, and the protection of property rights, noting that any demolition conducted without proper authorisation does not represent the position or practice of the current administration.
“We want to assure residents that the Lagos State Government remains committed to fairness, due process, and the protection of property rights.
“Any demolitions carried out without proper authorisation do not reflect the policy or practice of this administration,”Sanusi further quoted the Commissioner.
The statement also urged all agencies operating within Lagos State—including federal agencies—to always consult and obtain clearance from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development before undertaking any demolition or enforcement exercise.
Olumide, through the statement, reiterated that the State Government would continue to uphold the rule of law, ensure orderly physical development, and safeguard the interests of law-abiding residents across the State.
