The Enugu State Police Command has explained why it arraigned Chisom Okonkwo, aged 29, for allegedly providing false information and defaming her husband, Okonkwo Ozioma, after falsely accusing him of defiling their two daughters, aged five and three.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the complaint was initially lodged by Chisom at the Emene Police Division on October 25, 2025, alleging that her husband had sexually assaulted their daughters and threatened to kill her if she disclosed it.
However, following the husband’s arrest and an extensive investigation, police findings revealed that the allegations were entirely false and misleading.
“Investigations established that during the periods in 2024 and 2025 when the alleged offences were said to have occurred, the complainant had travelled alone with the children to their hometown in Imo State,” Ndukwe stated.
He further disclosed that the couple’s seven-year-old son, in two separate voluntary statements, exonerated his father and confessed that their mother had coached him and his sisters to falsely accuse their father, a claim supported by video evidence.
“Upon realising that the truth was emerging and the case was turning against her, the complainant made attempts to withdraw the case and halt further police investigation,” the police spokesman added.
Having failed to substantiate her claims, the suspect was subsequently charged before the Magistrate Court of Enugu State on a two-count charge of defamation and giving false information. She was granted bail, while the case was adjourned for further hearing.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Giwa, commended detectives of the State Intelligence Department (SID) for their thorough and impartial investigation, reiterating the Command’s commitment to fairness, justice, and professionalism in handling all cases.
He also warned members of the public against making false or malicious allegations, stressing that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
