Lagos Intensifies Sanitation Drive, Deploys 1,710 Public Toilets

The Lagos State Government has stepped up efforts to eradicate open defecation, announcing that no fewer than 1,710 public toilets are now operational across the state as part of a broader sanitation drive.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the facilities have been strategically deployed to serve residents and visitors in key locations.

‎He described the development as “a critical component of the state’s ongoing commitment to improving public hygiene and environmental sustainability,” adding that “the availability of these facilities is aimed at ensuring cleaner surroundings and better sanitation outcomes.”

‎Wahab, however, stressed that government efforts alone would not be sufficient to completely eliminate open defecation in a densely populated urban centre like Lagos.‎“Government cannot do this alone. We are encouraging businesses such as filling stations, banks, eateries and other public-facing establishments to make their restrooms accessible to the public where possible,” he said, adding that “this collaborative approach will significantly expand access to sanitation facilities across the state.”

‎The commissioner also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enforcing environmental sanitation laws, warning that offenders would face legal consequences.

‎“Individuals caught engaging in open defecation are being arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law. These measures are necessary to protect public health, preserve dignity, and maintain a cleaner environment for all,” he stated.

‎He further emphasised that sanitation is a shared responsibility, urging residents and business operators to actively support the initiative.

‎“While the government continues to expand sanitation infrastructure, residents and businesses must play their part in ensuring that Lagos remains clean, safe and habitable,” Wahab added.

‎The renewed campaign forms part of ongoing efforts by the state government to promote a healthier environment and reduce the public health risks associated with poor sanitation practices.
