The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to building a more sustainable environment, stating that climate change, waste management and environmental degradation require collective responsibility and early awareness, especially among young people.

This was the focus of the 2025 Environmental Bees Club (EBC) Members and Handlers Sensitization Programme held over the weekend in Alausa.

Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Dr. Tajudeen Gaji, emphasized that the sensitization initiative must go beyond knowledge sharing to inspire genuine action.

Represented by the Director, Environmental Education Unit, Mrs. Monsurat Banire, he noted that the EBC remains a strategic platform for nurturing environmentally conscious young people who can drive long-term sustainability efforts across the state.

According to Kunle Adeshina, Director of Public Affairs, Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, the programme “is about transforming mindsets, empowering students to act responsibly, and preparing a generation that will not only inherit the earth but protect it.”

Gaji explained that this year’s edition emphasized practical environmental stewardship, encouraging participants to think critically and advocate for sustainable practices within their schools and communities.

He added that the introduction of the Eco-Winner Sustainability Tour brought a healthy competitive edge to the programme, rewarding students who demonstrated innovation and excellence in environmental projects.

He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to policies that promote a clean and sustainable Lagos, including waste management reforms, green infrastructure, renewable energy initiatives and continuous public awareness.

He stressed, however, that the success of these efforts depends on students, teachers, parents and communities working hand in hand.Earlier, Deputy Director of the Environmental Education Unit, Mrs. Esther Olaleye, said the gathering of students from all six education districts at one location was designed to broaden participation and deepen impact.

She urged participants to approach the sessions with creativity and openness, noting that sustainability “must become a way of life.”During the training, Deputy Director, Environmental Assessment, Dr. Lasisi Adedoyin, delivered a lecture on “Understanding Healthy and Sustainable Environment,” where he explained the concepts of climate change, mitigation and adaptation measures.

The event also featured prize presentations to outstanding students who excelled during the training sessions.
