The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has expressed deep condolences over the death of a Federal Fire Service officer who was killed in a road traffic accident along the Trade Fair–inward Abule-Ado service lane in Lagos.
According to Adebayo Taofiq, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, preliminary findings showed that the incident occurred after a commercial motorcyclist, who was riding against traffic at high speed, rammed into the Fire Service officer as he attempted to cross the expressway.
“In the resulting confusion, a Shacman truck loaded with sand was unable to brake effectively, culminating in the fatal incident,” Adebayo said.
He added that LASTMA personnel stationed in the Trade Fair corridor responded swiftly, cordoning off the scene to maintain order and protect other road users. “With support from passersby, our officers secured the area and immediately alerted the Onireke Police Division,” he stated.
Police officers were said to have arrived promptly to commence investigations and reinforce security. Adebayo explained that the motorcyclist who caused the initial collision fled with his motorcycle, while the truck driver abandoned his vehicle and escaped.
The remains of the deceased officer were later evacuated by officials of the Federal Fire Service in an ambulance deployed from the Trade Fair Complex.
Adebayo noted that LASTMA officers handed over the impounded truck to security personnel for full investigation and further legal action.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, conveyed his condolences to the family of the late officer and prayed for strength to bear the loss. He assured them of the agency’s support during this difficult period.
Bakare-Oki also decried the continued disregard for traffic rules, particularly one-way driving, which he said had caused numerous avoidable deaths. He urged motorists and commercial motorcyclists to obey traffic signs and speed limits as part of their responsibility to safeguard lives.
LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to promoting road safety, enforcing traffic regulations, and fostering a disciplined motoring culture across Lagos State.
