Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has presented Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to chairmen of the 20 local government areas in the state, in a move aimed at strengthening grassroots governance.
The presentation ceremony was held in Abeokuta on Thursday, amid the Christmas festivities.
Governor Abiodun, who spoke through the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Ganiyu Hamzat, commended the local government chairmen for their roles in delivering dividends of democracy at the grassroots level.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustained collaboration with the councils to enhance governance, improve service delivery and uplift the welfare and quality of life of residents across the state.
According to the governor, the vehicles were provided to ease mobility challenges faced by council chairmen and to strengthen their capacity to effectively reach communities, particularly in rural areas.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Ogun State chapter, Dr. Afolasade Adeyemo, described the gesture as timely and commendable.
Adeyemo, who also serves as the Chairman of Odeda Local Government, expressed deep appreciation to Governor Abiodun for fulfilling his pledge, noting that the development would further enhance the effectiveness of local councils.
She lauded the governor’s achievements across critical sectors such as education, housing, healthcare and road infrastructure, adding that the administration’s ISEYA mantra has continued to position Ogun State on a positive development trajectory.
The ALGON chairman assured that the local government chairmen would remain committed to partnering with the state government to make Ogun State the pride of its indigenes, residents and Nigerians at large.
She added that the newly acquired vehicles would significantly improve the chairmen’s ability to access rural communities and respond promptly to the aspirations and needs of people at the grassroots.
