The Lagos State Government has intensified cleanup operations along the Lagos – Badagry Road corridor as part of efforts to curb indiscriminate waste dumping and improve environmental sanitation.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a social media post on Monday, noting that the Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA) had scaled up evacuation and sanitation efforts across the busy commercial axis.
“In the last one week, the Lagos State Waste Management Agency has intensified cleanup operations along the Lagos–Badagry Road corridor,” Wahab said.
He said the Alaba Rago median had been cleared, with substantial portions evacuated from Volks through Agric Bus Stop, adding that teams were sanitising already cleared sections to prevent a return of indiscriminate dumping.
“I have been briefed that the Alaba Rago median has been cleared, with substantial portions evacuated from Volks through Agric Bus Stop. Our teams have continued sanitising the already cleared sections to prevent a return of indiscriminate dumping,” he said.
According to the commissioner, the cleanup would continue systematically across the corridor, with the remaining Agric median scheduled to be cleared next, followed by Onireke and Abule Ado/Trade Fair, before concluding between Agboju, Mazamaza and Mile 2.
“Work is ongoing, and we are moving systematically. The remaining stretch of the Agric median will be cleared next, after which operations will proceed to Onireke and Abule Ado/Trade Fair. We will then conclude with the heaps between Agboju, Mazamaza and Mile 2,” Wahab stated.
He said the operation was aimed not only at waste evacuation but also at protecting road infrastructure and improving public health along the major commercial route.
“This operation is not just about evacuation. It is about restoring order, protecting road infrastructure and improving public health along this busy commercial corridor,” he said.
Wahab warned that the government would sustain enforcement and monitoring to prevent a recurrence of illegal dumping on road medians.
“Let me be clear, we will sustain enforcement and monitoring across the axis to ensure these medians do not become dumpsites again,” he added.
The commissioner commended LAWMA officials and its Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, for their efforts and urged residents and traders along the Ojo–Badagry axis to patronise approved waste collection services.
“I commend LAWMA officials and the MD, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, who have worked tirelessly over the past week under challenging conditions. Residents and traders along Ojo–Badagry Road must play their part by using approved waste collection services and refraining from illegal disposal on road medians,” Wahab said.
He reiterated the state’s commitment to environmental cleanliness, noting that collective responsibility was key to achieving a cleaner Lagos.
“We will not relent. A clean Lagos is achievable when government does its duty and citizens act responsibly,” he said.
