Trump’s Attack on Pope Leo Sparks Global Outrage, Draws Iran’s Ire

A fresh wave of diplomatic and religious tension has erupted following remarks by Donald Trump criticising Pope Leo XIV, drawing sharp condemnation from Iran and triggering wider global reactions.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday denounced Trump’s comments as offensive to the Catholic leader and disrespectful to Christian values, framing the issue as one of global religious sensitivity.

Trump, speaking on Sunday, had said he is “not a big fan” of the 70-year-old American pontiff, accusing him of being “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy.” The remarks followed criticism by the Pope over ongoing geopolitical conflicts involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

“He’s a very liberal person, and he’s a man that doesn’t believe in stopping crime,” Trump said, while also taking issue with what he described as the Vatican’s silence during restrictions on religious gatherings at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He further stated that he does not “want a Pope who thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon,” adding pointedly, “If I wasn’t in the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in the Vatican.”

The comments have since ignited widespread backlash across diplomatic and religious circles.

Reacting via a post on X, Pezeshkian wrote:

“His Holiness Pope Leo XIV (@Pontifex), I condemn the insult to Your Excellency on behalf of the great nation of Iran, and declare that the desecration of Jesus, the prophet of peace and brotherhood, is not acceptable to any free person. I wish you glory by Allah.”

Analysts say the exchange underscores deepening geopolitical fault lines, where political rhetoric is increasingly intersecting with religious authority on the global stage.

The controversy comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the Middle East. The United States, under Trump’s directive and in coordination with Israel, launched missile strikes on Iran in February under Operation Epic Fury. Tehran responded with retaliatory strikes targeting locations across parts of the Gulf region, escalating fears of a broader regional conflict.

Efforts to de-escalate the situation appear to have stalled. A reconciliation meeting held over the weekend in Islamabad, Pakistan, ended without a breakthrough, further dimming prospects for immediate diplomatic resolution.

With reactions continuing to pour in, observers warn that the dispute risks widening divisions not only between states but also across religious and political communities worldwide.
