Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved a N50,000 wage award for public sector workers in Lagos State as part of measures to ease the impact of current economic pressures.
The governor announced the intervention on Friday at the International Workers’ Day celebration held at Mobolaji Johnson Arena. Represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, Sanwo-Olu said the award would take effect for the month of May.
He said the decision was informed by rising living costs and broader economic realities affecting workers. “For the month of May, Lagos State Government has approved an additional N50,000 for all workers. We are aware of prevailing economic challenges, including increasing fuel prices and global pressures. This decision is to support our workforce during this period,” he stated.
The governor commended workers across sectors for their role in sustaining the state’s growth, describing them as the backbone of Lagos’ resilience. He noted that the commitment of teachers, healthcare personnel, artisans and civil servants continues to drive development.
Addressing key concerns, Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the challenges of housing and transportation facing many workers, stating that the government was intensifying efforts to address them.
He said ongoing investments in affordable housing would deliver thousands of units, with additional projects scheduled for completion before the end of 2026.
According to him, the state’s rent-to-own housing scheme requires a five per cent initial payment, with structured repayment plans designed to ensure affordability for workers.
On transportation, the governor highlighted continued expansion of the rail system to improve mobility and productivity. He noted that millions of passengers have already benefited from the service, with further upgrades and additional coaches underway.
Sanwo-Olu also assured retirees of sustained pension payments, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to their welfare, while emphasising the importance of maintaining engagement with organised labour.
Earlier, the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, said a well-motivated workforce remains critical to efficient service delivery and long-term development in the state.
