As the Super Falcons prepare for the second leg of their 2026 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier against the Amazons of Benin Republic, the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has announced a cash reward of N50 million to motivate the team.
Governor Abiodun made the announcement on Monday at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, when he received the nine-time African champions, who are scheduled to play the decisive return leg at the MKO Abiola International Stadium on Tuesday.
The Super Falcons had defeated the Amazons of Benin Republic 2–0 in the first leg on Friday, October 24, with goals from Chinwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo.
Speaking during the visit, Governor Abiodun commended the team for their consistency and resilience, describing their success as an inspiration to millions of Nigerian women and youths.“As you prepare for the match, I have no doubt that you’re going to qualify,” the Governor said.
“My support today is both an appreciation for your last victory and a motivation for your next tournament. On behalf of the government and people of Ogun State, we will be giving you a sum of N50 million.”
Governor Abiodun also revealed plans to further develop the MKO Abiola Sports Arena into a premier sports and leisure hub, featuring a four or five-star hotel, cinema, and shopping centre, among other facilities, to boost sports tourism and community development in the state.
He congratulated the Super Falcons on their historic 10th WAFCON title, describing their triumph in Morocco as “a moment of national pride” that united Nigerians across divides.“What you are doing goes beyond playing football,” Abiodun said.
“You exemplify leadership, teamwork, and discipline. Through you, young women are inspired to know that what a man can do, a woman can do even better.”
In his remarks, the Head Coach, Justin Madugu, thanked the Governor and people of Ogun State for their consistent hospitality and support, noting that the world-class facilities at the MKO Abiola Stadium have made the team’s preparation seamless.
“Each time we come to play here, we have no worries about facilities or reception. The environment and support make our job easy, and we are very grateful, Your Excellency,” Madugu said.
Also speaking, team captain Rasheedat Ajibade appreciated the Governor’s continuous support and assured that the team would keep making the nation proud.“We thank Your Excellency for the world-class facility and your belief in us. We promise to keep putting smiles on the faces of Nigerians each time we wear the green and white jersey,” she said.
