Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a brother, a friend, and a devoted patriot whose life symbolised unwavering service to Nigeria.
In a solemn statement issued on Sunday, July 13, 2025, following the announcement of Buhari’s passing in London at the age of 82, Babangida recalled their shared journey that began in 1962 at the Nigerian Military Training College in Kaduna.
He described Buhari as “quiet yet resolute, principled yet humble,” and someone who remained “deeply patriotic and fiercely loyal to Nigeria” throughout his life.
“Our paths crossed in 1962… from those early days, Muhammadu stood out,” Babangida wrote. “We shared trenches and trials, dreams and disappointments, victories and moments of reflection. Our bond was forged not only by military training, but by a shared commitment to the ideals of service, discipline, and love for country.”
Reflecting on Buhari’s leadership and legacy, Babangida praised his consistency in upholding integrity and dignity in public office—both as military Head of State (1984–1985) and later as a democratically elected President (2015–2023).
He also highlighted Buhari’s spiritual depth and modesty, describing him as a “moral compass” even in retirement.“His passing is not just the loss of a former Head of State. It is the loss of a symbol — a man whose life embodied Nigeria’s journey from the old order to the democratic era,” he said.
General Babangida extended condolences to Buhari’s wife, Aisha, his children, grandchildren, and the entire nation.
He prayed for Allah’s mercy upon the departed leader and that his legacy of service and integrity will continue to inspire future generations.“May his legacy endure,” the statement concluded.
