Sometimes, the trouble we spend days trying to escape begins with a decision we made in a moment of excitement. Life teaches us lessons every day, but perhaps the wisest are those we learn from the mistakes and misfortunes of others before we are forced to learn them ourselves.

A few years ago, Felix, a married businessman, was introduced to a beautiful young lady, Ada, by a businessman colleague at a nightclub in Ikeja. What began as a casual introduction soon developed into a relationship in which Felix became increasingly generous. Within weeks, he had bought Ada the latest iPhone and later assisted her when her sister faced an accommodation problem.

Then, another iPhone model entered the market. Ada wanted to be among the first to own it and mounted pressure on Felix to buy it for her. Feeling the strain, Felix appealed for patience, explaining that he was going through a financially difficult period. But Ada would not let up.

During one of their private meetings, Ada secretly recorded Felix in a compromising situation without his knowledge. The following Monday, she sent the video to him on WhatsApp and gave him two days to buy her the latest iPhone or she would release the video on the internet.

Faced with the threat, Felix bought the phone the following day and handed it to Ada, insisting that she delete the video. She deleted the copy in his presence, but unknown to Felix, she had kept another copy elsewhere.

Three weeks later, the video resurfaced. This time, the demand was N1.5 million. Ada threatened to post it on Felix’s wife’s Facebook timeline if he failed to pay. Distressed, Felix turned to confidants, who appealed to Ada to give him time to raise the money. With the support of a friend, they also sought the assistance of a senior police officer.

A plan was eventually devised to lure Ada to their usual rendezvous on the pretext of collecting the money. Instead of meeting Felix with the cash, however, she met waiting police officers. The trap had worked. With police assistance, the videos were recovered from Ada and her sister, whom Felix had earlier helped with accommodation.

Felix subsequently opted not to pursue the case further and chose to have Ada and her sister released. The incident ended, but its lesson remains relevant, particularly in an age when smartphones can capture and preserve private moments indefinitely.

Yesterday, the iPhone 18 series and iPhone Duo foldable hit the market. The temptation to own the latest gadgets may be strong, but no device, however fashionable or expensive, is worth placing one’s privacy, peace of mind or reputation in the hands of another person. Felix’s experience shows how misplaced trust can turn an ordinary relationship into a dangerous trap.

Sometimes, the price of a lesson is money. Sometimes it is embarrassment, and sometimes it is the painful realisation that the person you trusted was the very person you needed to guard against. The best lesson, however, is the one learned before the trap closes.

Stay wise, stay alert, protect your privacy and, above all, watch your back.

    Thank God it’s another Friday.
