The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Aina Adesola, has ordered the immediate redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Jesse Division, Ethiope East Local Government Area, over allegations of extortion.
The DPO, whose full identity was not disclosed, was accused of collaborating with two officers identified as Bright and Usman in the alleged act.
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, following the circulation of a viral video in which a woman accused the officers of extorting money from her.
According to Edafe, the complainant alleged that the officers collected N2.5 million from her with the promise that her brother, who is currently in police custody, would be released.
Providing background to the case, the police spokesperson explained that on January 1, 2026, the youth leader of Jesse community arrested some suspects and handed them over to the police. Among them was the complainant’s younger brother, later identified as Israel Onojeruo, aged 20.
Edafe said the suspect was arrested based on the confession of another suspect, Okoro Desmond, who allegedly claimed to have sold a firearm to Onojeruo. The suspects were subsequently transferred to the State Anti-Cult Unit (SACU) for further investigation.
On the extortion allegation, Edafe said the Commissioner of Police promptly ordered an investigation.
“The Commissioner of Police directed the AC X-Squad to investigate the allegation against the officers. The constable identified as Bright in the video has been detained at the command headquarters, while the DPO has been removed and redeployed to the command headquarters pending the outcome of the investigation,” the statement said.
The police added that the DPO’s redeployment followed “a series of complaints of extortion and unprofessionalism” previously levelled against him from different quarters.
Adesola assured members of the public that any officer found culpable after investigation would be dealt with decisively in line with the Police Act and existing regulations.
He emphasised that the command would not tolerate extortion, intimidation, incivility, or any form of unprofessional conduct by its officers.
