Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have intercepted 490 grams of suspected cocaine ingeniously concealed inside energy-saving bulbs and recovered a pump-action gun linked to a murder and cultism case, in a series of coordinated intelligence-led operations across the state.
The breakthrough, which occurred on April 13, 2026, underscores what the Command described as its sustained offensive against drug trafficking and violent crimes through proactive policing strategies.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the first operation was carried out by operatives of the Safer Highway Patrol stationed along the Onicha-Ugbo/Ewohimi Road, where a Sienna bus heading to the northern part of the country was intercepted during a routine stop-and-search exercise.
He said the vehicle, driven by a 47-year-old suspect, Osuke Stephen, was subjected to a thorough search based on credible intelligence, leading to the shocking discovery of illicit drugs hidden inside electric energy-saving bulbs.
“During the search, officers uncovered substances suspected to be cocaine, weighing about 490 grams, and 4 grams of weeds suspected to be loud, cleverly concealed to evade detection,” Edafe stated.
Preliminary investigations, he added, revealed that the illicit consignment was being transported to Abuja, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the syndicate linked to the operation.
In another development, operatives of the command, following investigations into a case involving conspiracy, cultism, and murder in Ughelli, recovered a pump-action gun with three rounds of live cartridges abandoned at the Ekigbo area.
“The recovery is connected to an earlier case where three suspects have been arrested, charged to court, and remanded for the murder of one Alex Adanike, which occurred on January 15, 2026,” Edafe said.
He further revealed that intelligence indicated one fleeing suspect, identified as Eddy Onose, who is linked to the Supreme Vikings Confraternity, had been in possession of the firearm before abandoning it upon sensing police surveillance.
“Efforts are ongoing, in collaboration with local vigilante groups, to apprehend the fleeing suspect and recover additional exhibits that may aid the investigation,” Edafe added.
Reaffirming the Command’s commitment to public safety, Edafe noted that the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has directed sustained intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks across the state.
“The Delta State Police Command remains resolute in its determination to rid the state of criminal elements. We urge members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to support the Police with timely and credible information,” he said.
