The Delta State Police Command has condemned a viral video showing officers collecting money from a motorist via a POS machine, announcing immediate disciplinary action against those involved.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on January 13, 2026, at ‘C’ Division, Asaba, has been described by the Command as “embarrassing, unprofessional and conduct unbecoming of police officers.”
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, Yemi Oyeniyi, said the actions of the officers were “inexcusable and unpardonable,” stressing that no citizen deserves such treatment from law enforcement personnel.
“The Command condemns the act in totality. No officer is authorised to demand or receive money from any member of the public under any guise,” the CP stated.
He reiterated the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, which expressly prohibits extortion and the use of POS machines or any electronic payment platforms within police formations.
According to him, “the use of POS machines for transactions within police facilities is strictly forbidden, and any officer found engaging in such acts will face severe disciplinary measures.”
The Command disclosed that the orderly room trial of the officers involved; Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, has already commenced, assuring that the outcome of the disciplinary process will be made public.
Oyeniyi warned that extortion and abuse of office would not be tolerated under his leadership, noting that officers must conduct themselves professionally and uphold the rights of citizens at all times.
“Officers are expected to discharge their duties in line with the provisions of the constitution, with utmost respect for fundamental human rights. The actions taken in this case will serve as a deterrent to others,” he added.
The command also commended members of the public for bringing the incident to light, describing public vigilance as critical to improving accountability within the Force.
“We appreciate concerned citizens who brought this misconduct to our attention. We encourage the public to continue reporting any case of police misconduct through the Complaint Response Unit,” the statement said.
The Delta State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, transparency and building public trust, assuring that no form of misconduct would be condoned.
