In a major push to deepen ongoing reforms, the Nigeria Police Force has approved a comprehensive restructuring of its Monitoring Unit to strengthen oversight, discipline, and operational efficiency across the system.

The restructuring, approved by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, is aimed at repositioning the Unit as a more effective internal accountability mechanism capable of addressing operational lapses and enforcing professional standards across commands and formations.

Confirming the overhauling, the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, said the restructuring was necessitated by the need to refocus the Unit on its core mandate and eliminate identified inefficiencies.

“This strategic reorganisation is designed to reposition the Police Monitoring Unit as a credible and result-driven internal oversight body, capable of ensuring strict compliance with operational standards and ethical conduct,” he said.

According to him, the revamped Unit has been streamlined and strengthened to enhance proactive monitoring, intelligence-driven inspections, and real-time supervision of police personnel nationwide.

“The restructured framework harmonises key investigative and monitoring functions in line with the broader reform agenda of the Nigeria Police Force,” Placid stated.

As part of the overhaul, the Inspector-General also approved a leadership transition within the Unit, appointing Deputy Commissioner of Police Aliyu Abubakar as Head of the Police Monitoring Team.

Placid noted that the new appointee brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in both the FCT and Rivers State Commands.

“DCP Aliyu Abubakar has demonstrated exceptional professionalism and operational competence in previous assignments, particularly in handling high-profile investigations and advancing modern policing techniques,” he said.

He added that Abubakar is widely respected for his community-oriented approach and commitment to transparency in policing.

Highlighting the significance of the reform, Placid emphasised that the Monitoring Unit would now play a central role in enforcing discipline and accountability within the Force.

“The Unit is expected to serve as a critical instrument for identifying operational lapses, ensuring compliance with established procedures, and promoting professionalism at all levels of the Force,” he said.

He further stressed that the initiative aligns with the IGP’s broader vision of institutional transformation.

“This reform underscores the commitment of the Inspector-General of Police to entrench discipline, transparency, and accountability as core values of policing in Nigeria,” Placid added.

Reaffirming the Force’s dedication to continuous improvement, he said the restructuring forms part of sustained efforts to build a more responsive and citizen-focused police institution.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in its pursuit of institutional reforms that will enhance service delivery, strengthen public trust, and ensure a more accountable and professional policing system,” he stated
