A woman who recently returned from the United Kingdom has died in a road accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway while travelling to Abeokuta, Ogun State, for a wedding ceremony.
The fatal crash occurred on Monday evening near the Christopher University axis of the busy highway, involving a Toyota Camry and a truck.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the accident happened at about 5:48 p.m.
“The crash involved a white Toyota Camry conveying three occupants and a truck moving in the same direction,” Akinbiyi said. “Preliminary findings indicate that the car rammed into the truck, with excessive speed suspected as a contributing factor.”
According to him, the victims comprised one male and two female passengers, all of whom sustained varying degrees of injuries in the collision.
“Regrettably, one of the female passengers died from injuries sustained in the crash, while the other two occupants were rescued with injuries,” he added.
Akinbiyi disclosed that the deceased and one of the injured victims had only recently returned to Nigeria from the United Kingdom and were on their way to Abeokuta for a wedding when the tragedy occurred.
“It was gathered that the victims were inbound Abeokuta for a wedding ceremony before the unfortunate incident happened,” he said.
The injured survivors were immediately taken to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment.
“The injured victims were evacuated to Famobis Hospital and Redeemed Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention,” Akinbiyi stated.
He added that the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the morgue of the Redeemed Hospital.
Expressing sympathy, the TRACE spokesperson condoled with the family of the deceased and reiterated the agency’s warning against reckless driving.
“We sympathise with the family of the deceased and urge motorists to avoid excessive speed and maintain safe driving practices at all times,” he said. “Speeding remains one of the major causes of road traffic crashes on our highways.”
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest transport corridors linking the South-West to other parts of the country, has continued to record frequent accidents, raising fresh concerns over road safety compliance and enforcement.
