The Federal Government has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a dedicated statesman who served Nigeria with unwavering commitment and integrity.
The late Nigerian leader, who once held office both as a military Head of State and as a democratically elected President, died on Sunday in a London hospital.
In a statement released on Monday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, conveyed the condolences of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the Buhari family, the government of Katsina State, and the entire nation.
President Tinubu urged Nigerians to honour Buhari’s memory by embracing the values he embodied — discipline, integrity, patriotism, and selfless service.
The statement reads in part:“President Buhari was a distinguished statesman, patriot, and a gentleman soldier who served Nigeria with unwavering dedication.
His stewardship as Military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985, and as democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, left an indelible mark on the nation’s history.
His historic victory in the 2015 general election underscored his enduring commitment to Nigeria’s democratic progress.”
The statement further highlighted Buhari’s legacy of anti-corruption, national unity, social investment, infrastructure development, and efforts to address Nigeria’s security challenges.
On behalf of President Tinubu, the Federal Government extended heartfelt condolences to the former President’s widow, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, his children, and the people of Katsina State.
As a mark of national mourning, President Tinubu has directed that all national flags be flown at half-mast from July 13 to July 20, 2025.Additionally, the President dispatched Vice President Kashim Shettima and the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, to London to accompany Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria for burial.
