In a bid to curb road crashes and ensure safer travel during the end-of-year rush, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a nationwide high-impact enforcement and safety operation across major highways and critical corridors.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, approved the full deployment of personnel and operational assets under the 2025 Operation Zero Tolerance Exercise, directing commanding officers in all formations to intensify enforcement, traffic control, and emergency response nationwide.

According to a statement signed by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, on Saturday, the operation commenced on December 15, 2025, and will run until January 15, 2026.

The exercise is an intelligence-driven initiative featuring round-the-clock patrols, rapid rescue services, and aggressive enforcement of traffic regulations aimed at reducing reckless driving and preventing avoidable crashes during the festive travel peak.

The FRSC said the operation is designed to dominate the highways and protect lives, stressing that there would be zero tolerance for negligence, compromise, or operational lapses. Commanding officers have been instructed to lead from the front and ensure optimal deployment of patrol vehicles, ambulances, speed-limiting devices, and other safety equipment.

Mohammed cautioned that professionalism and integrity must guide all engagements with road users, warning that any form of dereliction of duty or compromise would attract severe sanctions.

The Corps Marshal also declared zero tolerance for mixed loading and distracted driving, noting that vehicles conveying passengers alongside goods or animals, as well as drivers using mobile phones while driving, would face strict penalties.

In addition, construction and road maintenance firms working on major highways have been urged to open up carriageways and remove avoidable bottlenecks to ease congestion and improve safety during the festive period.

Beyond enforcement, the operation includes extensive public enlightenment campaigns at motor parks, markets, religious centres, and other public spaces, with motorists reminded that speeding, drunk driving, dangerous overtaking, overloading, and disregard for traffic signs remain leading causes of fatal crashes.

The FRSC further called for enhanced collaboration with sister security agencies, emergency responders, transport unions, and community leaders to ensure effective traffic management and swift response to incidents.

Reaffirming its mandate, the Corps urged road users to cooperate with officers and take responsibility for their safety, assuring Nigerians of its commitment to safer roads in line with its vision of zero crashes, zero injuries, and zero deaths.
