The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos State Area Unit, on Monday condemned the rising wave of insecurity across the country, declaring that banditry, terrorism, kidnapping and the killing of innocent citizens are grave violations of Shariah and have no place in Islam.
The society, through its newly inaugurated Amir (President), Dr. Ajibola Yusuf Salami, expressed concern over persistent attacks on communities, kidnappings for ransom and other violent crimes, warning that the trend continues to threaten national development, public safety and the future of young Nigerians.
Speaking during a press briefing to mark the inauguration of a new administration of the society in Lagos, Salami said the sanctity of human life remains one of the highest objectives of Islamic law, making all forms of terrorism, banditry and violent criminality unacceptable.
According to him, Islam leaves no room for ambiguity in its condemnation of those who terrorise communities, abduct innocent people and shed blood for unlawful gain.
“The unlawful taking of life, kidnapping of innocent persons, banditry, terrorism and violent criminality are grave offences that contradict the teachings of Islam and the values of every civilised society,” Salami said.
He cited the Holy Qur’an, noting that Islam places a premium on the protection of human life.
“Banditry, kidnapping and terrorism are among the gravest forms of corruption on earth, and Islam leaves no room for ambiguity in condemning them,” he stated.
Salami further stressed that individuals who engage in attacks on communities, the destruction of livelihoods and the terrorising of innocent citizens have completely departed from the teachings of Islam.
“Those who terrorise communities, abduct innocent people and shed blood in pursuit of unlawful gain have departed entirely from the teachings of our faith,” he said.
The MSSN Lagos president described kidnapping for ransom, terrorism and attacks on innocent citizens as not only crimes against the state but also violations of divine injunctions and crimes against humanity.
He said recent incidents of kidnapping, violent crimes and attacks on communities continue to raise legitimate concerns among Nigerians despite ongoing efforts by security agencies and governments at various levels to address the country’s security challenges.
“Educational institutions and student communities must never become vulnerable targets for criminal elements,” he added.
While condemning the violence, Salami urged authorities to move beyond rhetoric and embrace decisive measures capable of addressing the root causes of insecurity and restoring public confidence.
“We believe Nigeria must move beyond condemnation towards decisive and sustainable solutions,” he said.
To tackle the growing security challenge, MSSN Lagos advocated the establishment of special anti-kidnapping, terrorism and banditry courts, speedy prosecution of suspects, stronger inter-agency collaboration among security agencies, deployment of technology-driven security systems, and enhanced protection for schools and campuses.
The society also called for greater investment in youth employment and economic opportunities, arguing that addressing socio-economic challenges would complement security efforts.
Salami further urged the government to enforce the maximum penalties provided by law against convicted kidnappers, terrorists and bandits whose actions result in loss of life and widespread terror.
“Nigeria cannot develop in an atmosphere of fear. Security must remain a national priority, and all stakeholders must work collectively to restore public confidence and safeguard lives and property,” he said.
The briefing formed part of activities marking the inauguration of a new MSSN Lagos administration led by Salami, which pledged to focus on educational advancement, youth empowerment, leadership development, student welfare and responsible citizenship across Lagos State.
Members of the new executive council unveiled at the briefing include Dr. Ajibola Yusuf Salami as Amir (President), Bro. Ridwan Aderolu as Naibul Amir (Vice President), Bro. Hamzah Alagbe as Naibul Amir in charge of Higher Institution Affairs, Bro. Abdulkabeer Taiwo Kuye as Naibul Amir overseeing Graduate Members Affairs, Bro. Muhammad Mustapha as General Secretary, and Hajia Rofiat Tijani as Amirah and head of the Sisters’ Circle.
The society also called on Nigerian youths to reject crime and embrace integrity, hard work and positive contributions to society, stressing that lasting success can only be achieved through lawful and productive endeavours.
