The Lagos State Government has warned young people against the dangers of cultism and urged residents travelling at night to exercise caution when boarding vehicles to avoid falling victim to one-chance robbery and other dangers.
The government issued the warnings in separate safety messages shared on its official social media platforms on Saturday, urging residents to make choices that would protect their lives, freedom and future.
On cultism, the government cautioned young people against being deceived by the perceived attraction and false sense of power associated with cult groups, stressing that the consequences could be devastating.
“Cultism doesn’t give you power. It takes your future,” the government said, urging young people to “say NO to cultism” because their “destiny is bigger than a secret oath.”
It also cautioned youths against allowing peer pressure or the desire to “level up” to draw them into cult groups, noting that such decisions could affect their freedom, education, families and future.
“You think say na power? Na prison,” the government warned, adding, “Dem go tell you say na to level up, dem no go tell you say na handcuff.”
The government also urged residents travelling at night to remain vigilant and take precautions before accepting rides. It advised them to verify their vehicles and drivers, share their trip details with trusted persons and remain aware of their surroundings.
“Someone is waiting for you to get home,” the government said, warning residents not to allow haste to compromise their safety.
“Stay alert. Stay connected. Get home safely,” it advised, while encouraging residents to look out for one another and share the safety message with family and friends.
The government stressed that a journey should not simply be about reaching a destination, but about ensuring that travellers return home safely.
