Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, has applauded the lasting educational legacy of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, whose visionary introduction of the Spelling Bee competition more than 20 years ago continues to shape academic excellence across the state.
Alli-Balogun, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, gave the commendation on Wednesday at the opening of the 21st edition of the Spelling Bee (Junior Category) organised by the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) in collaboration with the New Era Foundation.
He described the competition as one of the most impactful academic initiatives in Nigeria, noting that it has consistently built confidence, literacy, and leadership qualities in pupils of Lagos public schools.
According to him, the programme, which has produced several One-Day Governors, reflects the state government’s continued commitment to nurturing intellectually vibrant learners.
The commissioner said this year’s edition promises to be highly competitive as pupils who emerged champions at their school and local government levels now contend for state honours. He expressed satisfaction with the progress recorded over the years and acknowledged the roles of successive First Ladies in sustaining the programme, including the current First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu.
In his goodwill message, Permanent Board Member of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), Hon. Babatunde Adewale, praised the state for maintaining a platform that identifies, grooms, and celebrates exceptional young talents. He described the Spelling Bee as a leadership-development programme that prepares pupils for future responsibilities.
Chairman of the Organising Committee and Director of Private Education and Special Programmes at OEQA, Dr. Sulaimon Ogunmuyiwa, highlighted the competition’s significance in improving diction, literacy, and academic performance.
“Language is the basis of all that we do,” he said. “When learners truly understand language, it reflects in their confidence, communication, and overall performance.”
He added that the competition aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S+ Agenda, especially the pillars on Education, Technology, and Social Inclusion.
Before the contest began, Quiz Master and General Manager of Lagos Television (LTV), Mrs. Sola Kosoko, outlined the rules and prepared contestants for the rounds ahead.
After several intense rounds, Master Yusuf Yusuf of Community Primary School, Oke-Odo, Agbado-Oke Odo LCDA, emerged winner of the 21st edition (Junior Category). Master Raphael Ntoliba of Olomu Primary School, Ajah, Eti-Osa LGA, and Master Monday Joshua of Muslim Mission Primary School, Oworonshoki, Kosofe LGA, placed second and third respectively.
Yusuf attributed his victory to dedication, consistent study, and family support.
With the primary schools’ contest concluded, the grand finale for secondary school students is scheduled for Wednesday, December 3, 2025, where the next One-Day Governor of Lagos State will emerge.
