The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has officially flagged off its “Catch-Them-Young” multi-sports trials, a comprehensive talent discovery initiative designed to identify and nurture young athletes in preparation for the 2025 National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, Delta State.
The ongoing trials, which span various sporting facilities across Lagos, target children aged 9 to 14 and feature a wide array of disciplines including athletics, swimming, boxing, table tennis, gymnastics, football, weightlifting, chess, badminton, ayo, and more.
The initiative aims not only to scout talents for the upcoming NYG, but also to lay a strong foundation for Lagos’ long-term sports development strategy.
Speaking at the venue of the track and field trials, the Director-General of the LSSC, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, underscored the importance of early talent development as a key driver for a sustainable sports ecosystem.
“The ‘Catch-Them-Young’ programme reflects our belief that every child in Lagos has the potential to become a champion.
By investing in grassroots talent now, we are building a generation of athletes who can compete and succeed at both national and international levels,” Fatodu said.
He added that the Commission is exploring international partnerships to expand training opportunities for standout talents and remains committed to strict age compliance, excellence, and legacy-focused sports development.
