The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to reviving and strengthening the tourism sector through strategic infrastructure projects designed to position the State as Africa’s premier destination for leisure and cultural experiences.
The Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, made this known on Thursday during a courtesy visit by the Chief Executive Officer of AKWAABA Africa Travel Market, Ambassador Ikechi Uko, at her office in Alausa, Ikeja.
Benson-Awoyinka disclosed that the State has commenced the construction of 68-bed chalets in Badagry, a major investment expected to boost hospitality services in the historic town and attract both local and international tourists.
“These significant projects are a way to reposition Lagos as Africa’s leading destination for tourism and leisure. The chalets will boost Badagry’s potential and brighten the image of Lagos tourism,” she said.
She encouraged Lagos residents to explore the State’s rich natural and cultural attractions, noting that many remain underappreciated despite their potential to drive domestic tourism.
Highlighting this year’s World Tourism Day celebration at Tarkwa Bay Beach, the Commissioner said the choice of venue underscores the government’s renewed focus on coastal tourism and beach-related investments.
Ambassador Uko applauded Lagos State’s proactive efforts, describing the renewed focus on coastal tourism as forward-looking and capable of consolidating the State’s position as a hub for beach and leisure tourism.
He also pledged his readiness to collaborate with the Ministry to promote sustainable growth in the sector.
