The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has intensified its enforcement drive against illegal developments, sealing several buildings under construction in the Lekki and Ikoyi areas for violating building regulations.
During the operation on Thursday, LASBCA officials shut down ongoing developments along Femi Okunnu Road and Alexander Avenue, where property owners were found to have commenced construction without securing the mandatory authorisation or building approval from the Lagos State Government.
The agency stated that strict compliance with building laws is crucial to curbing unauthorised structures and ensuring public safety as well as orderly urban development across the state.
In the course of the enforcement exercise, LASBCA also issued a 72-hour ultimatum to QMB Mart to remove all illegal extensions and structures built on the coastal road and under the powerline in Lekki.
According to the Special Adviser to the Governor on E-GIS and Urban Development, Dr. Olajide Babatunde Abiodun, the space was originally allocated to QMB Mart solely for use as a parking lot. However, the occupants allegedly converted it into a commercial hub, housing a laundromat, clubhouse, and eatery, all without proper approvals.
“Development in Lagos must follow due process. Any structure built without approval or any change of use of government-allocated spaces without authorisation is illegal. We are committed to ensuring that the state’s master plan is respected,” Dr. Abiodun said.
He stressed that the Lagos State Government will not tolerate any form of illegal construction or abuse of designated land use, warning developers to desist from circumventing established procedures.
Also speaking, the General Manager of LASBCA, Builder (Mrs.) Gbaye Florence, reaffirmed the agency’s determination to sustain routine monitoring and enforcement across all parts of Lagos.
“Our job is to ensure that buildings across Lagos are safe and comply with global standards. Anyone who puts up structures without approval will be tracked, marked, and sanctioned in accordance with the law,” she said.
LASBCA maintained that the ongoing enforcement operations will continue in other parts of the state as part of its broader effort to eliminate illegal structures and promote a safer, well-planned Lagos.
