The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the careers of young athletes as Team Lagos departs for the 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State.
With a contingent of 416 athletes and 80 technical officials, Lagos is determined to consolidate its position as a sporting powerhouse in Nigeria.
Speaking ahead of the departure on Wednesday, August 27, the Director-General of LSSC, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, noted that the Commission has identified key areas of improvement in order to motivate and inspire athletes for peak performance.
He stated that, having secured 11 tickets at the South-West Zonal Eliminations in Ibadan, Team Lagos is confident of recording another impressive outing in Asaba.
According to Fatodu, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has provided extraordinary support for the Commission’s initiatives, ensuring the athletes are well equipped and motivated.
“We have increased the reward system for athletes, technical crew, and coaches, and these variables will contribute to our success,” he said, assuring Lagosians of a strong showing at the Games.
He further explained that Lagos is focused on excellence and fair play, particularly in football, where the Commission has taken measures to eliminate age cheating. “Our winning formula is based on empirical analysis, ensuring that every athlete presented fits into the appropriate age category.
With talented athletes and a well-crafted strategy, Lagos is poised to take its rightful place as a sporting powerhouse in Nigeria and beyond,” Fatodu affirmed.
The Director-General expressed optimism that the contingent would produce multiple podium finishes across various sports including athletics, swimming, boxing, and weightlifting.
He described Lagos athletes as “the cynosure of all eyes,” stressing that they are prepared not just to win medals but also to entertain and inspire Nigerians.“Lagosians should expect nothing less than excellence.
Our athletes are ready to show stellar performances and reinforce Lagos’ reputation as the home of multi-sports in Nigeria,” Fatodu added, pledging that the state would emerge from the Games stronger than ever.
