The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a criminal charge against a 27-year-old man, Innocent Onukwume, for allegedly advocating a coup against the Federal Government.
According to court documents, the six-count charge was lodged at the Federal High Court, Abuja, with suit number FHC/ABJ/CR/610/2025. The DSS, through its counsel, A. M. Danalami, filed the charge on November 11, 2025, alleging that the offences were committed in October.
The security agency accused Onukwume of violating provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2024 (asamended), and the Criminal Code Act, Cap 77, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
In the first count, the DSS alleged that Onukwume, “sometime in October 2025, with intent to cause fear and alarm to the public or disturb public peace,” posted a message on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account @theagroman, calling for a coup in Nigeria.
The alleged post read:
“A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigeria government and join the AES. That is all we need now.”
The DSS maintained that the statement amounted to an incitement capable of undermining national security and public order.
Onukwume, who is the sole defendant in the case, is expected to be arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja within the week.
If convicted, the offences carry penalties under Section 59(1) of the Criminal Code Act and other relevant provisions of the law.
