A mother and her son narrowly escaped death on Wednesday morning after a Lexus sport utility vehicle somersaulted multiple times at the NYSC Bus Stop corridor along the LASU–Isheri Expressway in Lagos.
The lone accident, which occurred during the early hours of peak traffic, involved a Lexus SUV with registration number KJA 39 JT, which was reportedly travelling from Isheri inward Igando when it suddenly lost stability and overturned thrice before coming to rest amid heavy vehicular movement.
Confirming the incident, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment of LASTMA, Taofiq Adebayo, said the crash could have been fatal but for the swift response of traffic officials deployed in the area.
“The Lexus SUV suddenly lost control and overturned repeatedly before finally coming to rest at the NYSC Bus Stop axis. Fortunately, the occupants, a mother and her son, survived the crash, although they sustained visible bruises and mild trauma,” Adebayo said.
He noted that LASTMA operatives on patrol in the corridor responded immediately and carried out a coordinated rescue operation.
“Our officers demonstrated professionalism and promptness in rescuing the victims from the wreckage of the severely damaged vehicle. Their timely intervention undoubtedly prevented a tragic loss of life,” he stated.
According to Adebayo, security reinforcement was provided by officers of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Igando Division, who ensured crowd control and secured the scene throughout the rescue and evacuation process.
“The police maintained order and safeguarded the area to allow seamless rescue and evacuation, while family members of the victims later arrived to convey them for further medical evaluation and care,” he added.
To prevent secondary accidents and traffic disruption on the busy LASU corridor, LASTMA officers promptly coordinated the removal of the crashed vehicle with the support of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
“The accidented vehicle was evacuated to prevent further collisions and congestion, and it has been handed over to the police for detailed investigation and administrative procedures,” Adebayo said.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed relief that no life was lost and extended prayers for the quick recovery of the victims.
“We are grateful that this incident did not claim any life. We wish the mother and her son a speedy recovery, and we remain committed to prompt emergency response, effective traffic management, and sustained enforcement of road safety regulations,” Bakare-Oki said.
He further cautioned motorists against speeding and neglecting routine vehicle checks.
“Motorists must adhere strictly to speed limits and ensure regular mechanical checks, especially braking systems, before embarking on any journey. Excessive speed combined with mechanical faults is a dangerous recipe for fatal road tragedies,” he warned.
The LASU–Isheri Expressway remains one of the busiest corridors in Lagos, and authorities continue to urge drivers to exercise caution and observe traffic regulations to prevent avoidable accidents.
