The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill prescribing life imprisonment for individuals convicted of defiling minors, in a decisive move to combat rising cases of child sexual abuse across the country.
The bill, passed on Tuesday, eliminates the option of fines for offenders, underscoring the Senate’s commitment to ensuring justice for victims and deterring would-be perpetrators of such heinous crimes.Senator Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North), who initiated the debate, had earlier proposed a 20-year jail term without an option of fine for anyone found guilty of defiling a minor.
He argued that children, especially those under 10, cannot give consent and that the trauma from such abuse often lasts a lifetime.
“For a minor, this is a kid that is not capable of consenting or otherwise and whose life can be destroyed almost permanently. Those involved in defilement should suffer great punishment,” Oshiomhole said.
However, the Senate rejected Oshiomhole’s proposal and adopted an amendment by Senator Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), who called for stiffer penalties, recommending life imprisonment for offenders regardless of gender.
“I propose that the punishment for defilement of minors be life imprisonment, whether it’s a man or woman found culpable,” Aliero stated.
The upper chamber subsequently adopted Aliero’s proposal, officially passing the bill that prescribes life imprisonment for pedophiles and those convicted of sexually exploiting minors.
The legislation marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen child protection laws and uphold the rights and dignity of minors.
