Nigerian Army Denies Reports of Mutiny Threat Over Salaries, Allowances

The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports alleging that soldiers are threatening mutiny over salaries and allowances, describing the claims as “false, misleading and deliberately sensational.”

In a statement issued on Monday, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, said the attention of the Army had been drawn to an online publication alleging discontent within the ranks over welfare issues.

“The report published by Sahara Reporters is false, misleading and deliberately sensational, designed to undermine public confidence and national security,” Anele said.

The Army reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of its personnel, noting that structured reforms were being implemented in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria and relevant government authorities.

“The Nigerian Army continues to implement structured welfare reforms, including periodic salary reviews, enhanced operational allowances, improved accommodation, medical care and insurance packages for troops and their families,” the statement said.

Reacting directly to the mutiny allegation, the Army stressed that no such threat existed within its ranks.

“At no time has there been any threat of mutiny within the Nigerian Army. Mutiny is a grave offence under military law and is alien to the ethos, discipline and professionalism of Nigerian Army personnel,” Anele stated.

The statement further noted that the Chief of Army Staff, upon assumption of duty, had initiated engagements with relevant authorities on troop welfare, which were already yielding positive results.

The Army urged the public to disregard the report, warning that attempts to portray the institution as unstable or lawless were irresponsible and harmful to national security.

“The public is advised to rely on official communication channels for accurate and verified information,” the statement added.
