The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has reaffirmed its decision to dissolve Senior Team Lagos, citing the need to inject fresh energy, discipline, and competitiveness into the state’s sporting programmes.
Director-General of the Commission, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, explained that the decision followed the team’s lacklustre performances at the 2020 and 2024 National Sports Festivals.
He said the move was aimed at repositioning Lagos sports for excellence.“This decision was not taken lightly. It was informed by the underwhelming outcomes of Senior Team Lagos and the need to build a system that celebrates merit, hard work, and dedication,” Fatodu stated.
He dismissed the recent protest by some purported members of the dissolved team, who demanded cash rewards, noting that such claims were unfounded.
According to him, financial rewards for sports festivals are discretionary, while the government has consistently met its statutory obligations, including allowances, welfare, and training support.
Fatodu described the protest as a ploy to discredit the government, especially following the governor’s announcement to host victorious Under-15 Team Lagos athletes.
He also condemned the assault on a Commission staff member during the protest, warning that those responsible would face prosecution.“The generosity of Mr. Governor towards Lagos athletes must never be taken for granted or abused.
Those who assaulted our staff will be identified and made to face the full wrath of the law,” he warned.
The DG stressed that the Commission remains committed to developing disciplined and competitive athletes, while maintaining zero tolerance for misconduct, violence, or lawlessness.
