Following the emergence of a viral video on social media, the Nigeria Police Force has ordered disciplinary action and medical evaluation for an officer attached to the Ikole-Ekiti Divisional Police Headquarters in Ekiti State.
The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid stated this on on Sunday. He said the officer, identified as a sergeant serving under the Ekiti State Police Command, had been taken into custody after the circulation of footage showing conduct considered grossly inconsistent with the ethics, discipline and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to Placid, the Ekiti State Police Command acted swiftly upon becoming aware of the video and immediately identified the officer involved.
The Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, subsequently directed that the officer undergo comprehensive psychological and medical evaluation as part of procedures preceding formal disciplinary actions.
The Nigeria Police Force explained that the assessment was necessary to ensure that all issues surrounding the officer’s conduct, including any possible underlying medical or psychological concerns, were professionally and responsibly addressed.
Condemning the conduct displayed in the video, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, described the incident as a serious breach of the discipline and decorum expected from personnel of the Force.
“The conduct exhibited in the viral video is unacceptable and clearly falls short of the standards of professionalism, discipline and responsibility expected of every officer of the Nigeria Police Force,” the IGP stated.
He stressed that the Force would not condone any behaviour capable of bringing the institution into disrepute or eroding public confidence in policing.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains a disciplined institution guided by established codes of conduct and ethical standards. Any officer found engaging in acts capable of undermining public trust or tarnishing the integrity of the uniform will be subjected to appropriate disciplinary measures,” he said.
The IGP further reaffirmed the Force’s zero-tolerance stance against substance abuse, misconduct and all forms of unprofessional behaviour among officers and men of the Force.
”We maintain zero tolerance for substance abuse and other forms of misconduct. The integrity of the Force and the confidence of Nigerians in law enforcement must be protected at all times,” he added.
He assured members of the public that the disciplinary process would be transparent and in accordance with existing regulations guiding the conduct of police personnel.
The Force also urged officers and men across commands and formations to uphold the core values of professionalism, self-discipline and accountability in the discharge of their duties.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to internal accountability and continuous reforms aimed at strengthening public confidence and ensuring responsible policing nationwide.
