The Nigeria Police Force has begun a transition to green energy with the acquisition of three specialised buses powered by alternative energy, signaling a major shift toward cost efficiency and environmentally friendly mobility.

The milestone was recorded on Tuesday as the Force received the vehicles from the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPF-TF) and the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PI-CNG & EV) at a ceremony held in Abuja.

The event marked the formal commencement of the Nigeria Police Force’s gradual transition from conventional fuel-powered vehicles to cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions in line with global best practices.

Speaking at the ceremony, representatives of the partner organisations described the donation as the first phase of a broader initiative aimed at modernising police mobility infrastructure nationwide.

“This intervention is not a one-off gesture but the beginning of a comprehensive programme to transform the operational fleet of the Nigeria Police Force,” the partners stated.

They further disclosed that plans are underway to convert existing police operational vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), a move expected to significantly reduce fuel costs and minimise environmental impact.

“Our objective is to ensure long-term sustainability by not only providing assets but also building the capacity required to maintain and optimise them effectively,” they added.

Responding, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, expressed appreciation to the Nigeria Police Trust Fund and the Presidential Initiative for what he described as a forward-looking intervention.

“The Nigeria Police Force is deeply appreciative of this visionary support, which aligns with our strategic goals of enhancing operational efficiency while embracing sustainable energy solutions,” the IGP said.

He noted that the adoption of alternative energy vehicles represents a critical step in repositioning the Force to meet contemporary policing demands.

“This transition to CNG and electric vehicles is not only a matter of cost reduction but a strategic necessity that aligns the Nigeria Police Force with global best practices in logistics, resource management, and environmental responsibility,” he stated.

The IGP assured that the newly acquired buses would be deployed to improve personnel mobility and welfare across commands.

“These vehicles will be strategically deployed to enhance personnel movement, improve response capabilities, and ultimately strengthen service delivery to the public,” he added.

He further emphasized the importance of building internal capacity to sustain the initiative, revealing plans to establish conversion and maintenance centres within the Force.

“To ensure sustainability, the Nigeria Police Force will develop internal conversion centres that will enable us to independently manage and maintain our fleet, thereby guaranteeing long-term efficiency and technological advancement,” the IGP said.

The police chief reiterated the Force’s commitment to innovation, noting that embracing modern technologies remains central to its reform agenda.

“We are committed to leveraging innovation and strategic partnerships to ensure that the Nigeria Police Force remains responsive, efficient, and aligned with emerging global standards,” he noted.

The ceremony featured the official handover of keys to the Inspector-General of Police and a tour of the newly acquired buses by dignitaries in attendance.

The collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, and the Presidential Initiative on CNG and Electric Vehicles underscores a shared commitment to equipping the Force with modern, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable mobility solutions.

“This partnership reflects a collective determination to position the Nigeria Police Force for the future, ensuring that our operations are not only effective but also sustainable and environmentally responsible,” the IGP concluded.
