Eight years after an alleged murder in the United Kingdom, the Nigeria Police Force has extradited the prime suspect, Matthew Chukwuemeka Adebiyi, from Nigeria to face justice abroad.

The extradition was facilitated through the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) Abuja, following a formal request by UK authorities in September 2024 to locate, arrest, and surrender the fugitive.

Adebiyi is wanted in connection with the alleged murder of one Joshua Boadu on June 18, 2018, after which he reportedly fled to Nigeria to evade arrest. He is also accused of involvement in the supply of crack cocaine, a Class-A controlled drug, between October 2017 and March 2018 within the UK.

Operatives of INTERPOL NCB Abuja arrested the suspect on January 23, 2025, triggering extradition proceedings before the Federal High Court, Lagos Judicial Division, under Suit No. FHC/L/CS/416/2025.

Delivering judgment on February 16, 2026, Justice A.O. Faji granted the application for his extradition in line with the Extradition Act, Cap E25, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

Subsequently, and in compliance with the court order as well as the execution of a surrender warrant by the appropriate authorities, the suspect was formally handed over to UK law enforcement officials on April 14, 2026, at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.

Confirming the development, the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, said the successful extradition underscores Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to international law enforcement cooperation.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in ensuring that fugitives do not find safe haven within our borders. This extradition demonstrates our firm commitment to upholding the rule of law and supporting global efforts in combating transnational crimes,” he said.

Placid further noted that the seamless collaboration between Nigerian authorities and their UK counterparts reflects the growing strength of international policing frameworks.

“Our collaboration with international partners, particularly through INTERPOL channels, continues to yield tangible results. We are determined to strengthen these partnerships to ensure that justice is served, irrespective of geographical boundaries,” he added.

Reiterating the position of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, the Force spokesman stressed that the Nigeria Police would sustain its drive towards professionalism, accountability, and global best practices.

“The Inspector-General of Police has consistently emphasised that Nigeria will not be a sanctuary for criminals. We will continue to pursue and facilitate the extradition of suspects wanted for serious offences, in accordance with the law,” Placid stated.

He assured that the Force would remain steadfast in leveraging legal instruments and international cooperation to tackle organised crime, protect citizens, and reinforce Nigeria’s standing in the global security architecture.
