The political landscape in Ogun State has begun to crystallise ahead of the 2027 general elections, following the formal unveiling of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in what insiders describe as the culmination of months of high-level consultations and strategic alignments.
    ‎
‎The announcement was made late Monday evening by Governor Dapo Abiodun during a strategic caucus meeting held in Abeokuta, where party leaders signalled a push for unity around a single candidate from Ogun West Senatorial District, a zone yet to produce a governor since the state’s creation.
    ‎
‎Abiodun said the decision followed “extensive engagements and consensus-building” among key stakeholders and aspirants, stressing that the move was aimed at presenting a formidable front for the party.
    ‎
‎“Today, those I considered as front-runners in Ogun West have given their consent and bought into the idea,” the governor declared.
    ‎
‎“Nothing will give me more joy than to break the 50-year-old jinx and ensure that Ogun West produces the next governor of Ogun State.”
    ‎
‎The governor disclosed that notable political figures, including Hon. Biodun Akinlade and Hon. Gboyega Isiaka, had thrown their weight behind the consensus arrangement, describing their support as a “turning point” in the political evolution of the district.
    ‎
‎Providing insight into unfolding developments, Abiodun revealed that the emergence of Adeola was not an isolated decision but one shaped by consultations with national leadership, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and party elders such as Olusegun Osoba.
    ‎
‎“A lot of discussions have taken place behind the scenes… they began about six months ago,” he said.

“The President expressed interest in who would work with him in Ogun State and sought our position on zoning.”
    ‎
‎According to the governor, he strongly advocated for Ogun West on grounds of equity and historical imbalance. “When he asked my preference, I said Ogun West without hesitation. It is the only district that has not produced a governor. On this, even my predecessors are in agreement.”
    ‎
‎Party sources hinted that further consultations are ongoing to consolidate support across other senatorial districts, with efforts focused on preventing post-primary fractures and possible defections.
    ‎
‎Abiodun also underscored the importance of capacity and financial strength in selecting the party’s candidate, noting that governorship contests require significant resources and organisational depth.
    ‎
‎“A governorship aspirant must not only have competence but also the capacity to fund and sustain a statewide campaign,” he stated. “We carefully assessed all aspirants before arriving at this decision.”
    ‎
‎He added that the APC remains the dominant political force in the state, citing increasing membership and weakened opposition structures as indicators of electoral advantage heading into 2027.
    ‎
‎In his acceptance speech, Adeola pledged to build on the developmental strides of the current administration and past leaders, assuring party members and residents of inclusive governance.
    ‎
‎“I am fully aware of the aspirations of our founding fathers and the expectations of our people,” Adeola said.
    ‎
‎“With your support, I will not let the party and the good people of Ogun State down.”
    ‎
‎He described Ogun as strategically vital to Nigeria’s economic and industrial growth, promising policies that would further unlock its potential.
    ‎
‎Despite the public show of unity, political observers note that the coming months will test the durability of the consensus, particularly as formal primaries approach and other interests recalibrate.
    ‎
‎There are indications that reconciliation efforts are ongoing within party ranks to accommodate diverse ambitions, while monitoring compliance with the Electoral Act and party guidelines.
    ‎
‎For now, however, the APC appears determined to close ranks early, banking on unity, zoning balance, and federal backing to secure a decisive advantage in the 2027 Ogun governorship race.
