The Ogun State Police Command has arrested multiple suspects and recovered illegal firearms in coordinated intelligence-led operations across Mowe, Sagamu, and Odeda.
In a statement on Sunday by the Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the operatives acting on credible intelligence in Mowe apprehended a 36-year-old suspect, Opeyemi Anuoluwapo, who was found loitering under suspicious circumstances near a bus stop.
A search conducted on him led to the recovery of a locally made single-barrel pistol, an expended cartridge, and charms concealed in his bag. The suspect reportedly confessed to being a member of a cult group during interrogation.
Similarly, operatives of the Quick Response Squad (QRS) in Sagamu recorded two separate arrests along the Sagamu/Ogijo Road.
According to Babaseyi, in the first incident, a 30-year-old motorcycle rider, Asaye Ajibola, was intercepted during a stop-and-search operation. A locally made firearm loaded with nine cartridges was recovered from him.
In another operation at the same axis, a 49-year-old suspect, Adedeji Olufemi, was arrested after he was found in possession of a locally made double-barrel gun with eight cartridges. He was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for the weapon.
In Odeda, police operatives responded to a shooting incident at the Sawmill area of Osiele, where a local vigilante member, Mutiu Sadiku, allegedly discharged a firearm accidentally while returning from the farm.
The incident left three persons injured. The suspect was promptly arrested, and the firearm used was recovered in collaboration with the Amotekun Corps. The injured victims were taken to hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.
All suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCIID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Babasɛyi, said the operations reflect the Command’s sustained resolve to rid the state of criminal elements.
“These coordinated operations underscore our commitment to proactive policing and intelligence-led strategies aimed at curbing cultism, illegal possession of firearms, and other violent crimes across the state,” he said.
He added that the Command would continue to intensify surveillance and enforcement measures to ensure public safety.
“We will not relent in our efforts to identify, apprehend, and prosecute offenders. The safety of residents remains our top priority, and we urge members of the public to continue supporting the police with timely and credible information,” Babaseyi stated.
He also encouraged residents to make use of the Command’s emergency lines to report suspicious activities, assuring that all information provided would be treated with confidentiality.
The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the professionalism and swift response of officers involved in the operations, reiterating the Command’s commitment to sustaining the momentum in the fight against crime.
