The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that armed policemen attacked residents during the ongoing demolition exercise carried out by the Lagos State Government in Oworonshoki.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Command described the claims as false, misleading, and deliberately concocted to misinform the public about the lawful activities of police officers deployed to maintain order during the state’s urban renewal exercise.
According to the Command, the demolition is being conducted by the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development in conjunction with the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences, following due process, after several months of official notices and payment of compensation to affected occupants.
Spokesperson for the Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, clarified that the presence of police personnel at the site was strictly to prevent a breakdown of law and order and not to intimidate or harm residents.
“At no time did officers of the Command engage in any act of violence, harassment, or collaboration with hoodlums as falsely reported. The allegations are entirely unfounded and should be disregarded,” Adebisi stated.
She emphasized that officers were under strict instructions to act professionally, remain civil, and respect human rights while providing security coverage for government officials carrying out lawful duties.
“The role of the Police in such operations is purely to provide security coverage and ensure the exercise is conducted peacefully. Any claims suggesting otherwise are mischievous and inaccurate,” Adebisi added.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment under the leadership of Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, to uphold the rule of law, protect lives and property, and support legitimate government policies that promote safety, urban development, and public order.
Adebisi also urged members of the public to verify information before sharing, noting that the spread of false reports undermines public confidence and the collective effort toward peace in the State.
