The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has described the maiden Skills Acquisition and Empowerment Programme for spouses of junior police officers as a strategic investment in police family welfare and a critical step towards enhancing the operational effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force.
The programme, organised by the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) in collaboration with the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), was officially flagged off at the M.D. Abubakar Police Barracks, Dei-Dei, Abuja, under the theme, “Empowering Families, Strengthening Communities: Advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda Through Skills Acquisition and Economic Empowerment.”
The event, hosted by the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, was attended by the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu; the National President of POWA, Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu; senior police officers; and beneficiary spouses of junior police officers drawn from commands across the country.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, the Inspector-General said the initiative reflects the Force’s commitment to improving the welfare of police personnel by empowering their families to attain financial independence.
”The Inspector-General of Police described the programme as an investment in the stability and wellbeing of police families, noting that officer welfare cannot be separated from that of their households,” Iniedu said.
Disu commended the spouses of junior police officers for their unwavering support, describing their contributions as vital to sustaining the morale, resilience and effectiveness of personnel across the Force.
He urged beneficiaries to make prudent use of the vocational training opportunities and start-up packs provided, stressing that they should be seen as a foundation for achieving sustainable livelihoods and long-term financial independence rather than as temporary relief.
Also speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu, said the initiative demonstrates the Fund’s recognition that the economic wellbeing of police families is integral to effective policing.
According to Iniedu, Sheidu said the vocational training and empowerment packages were designed to create sustainable household incomes while advancing President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda through inclusive economic empowerment.
The National President of POWA, Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu, described the initiative as a strategic investment in the morale and professionalism of the Nigeria Police Force.
”She noted that national security begins at home and pledged POWA’s continued partnership with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund to sustain the programme, while calling on other government agencies and corporate organisations to emulate the initiative,” Iniedu said.
He added that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to strengthening the welfare of its personnel and their families through sustained collaboration with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, POWA and other stakeholders to build stronger police families and a more effective and professional Force nationwide.
