The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into the fatal shooting of Adedipe Adeyinkan, popularly known as “Agali,” in a late-night incident that has sparked concern along residents of Surulere.
The incident occurred on Saturday night along the busy National Stadium Bridge, inward Iponri, an area known for its heavy vehicular movement and commercial activity.
Police authorities confirmed that the victim was shot at about 11:30 p.m. before being rushed to Mainland General Hospital in Yaba, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
In a statement shared via its official X handle on Sunday, the command said it had commenced a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing.
“The Command is aware of the shooting incident involving Adedipe Adeyinkan, popularly known as ‘Agali,’ which occurred on April 11, 2026, at about 11:30 p.m. on National Stadium Bridge inward Iponri,” the statement read.
“The victim was rushed to Mainland General Hospital, Yaba, where he was confirmed dead. Investigation is ongoing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Eyewitness accounts and viral videos from the scene painted a picture of confusion and panic in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.
A video circulating on social media showed a damaged white vehicle abandoned near the bridge, while a crowd gathered in shock as news of the killing spread.
A trader who operates near the axis described the moment as “terrifying,” noting that many initially thought it was an armed robbery attack.
“We just heard gunshots and people started running. Nobody could immediately tell what was happening. It was later we heard someone had been shot,” the witness said.
Another resident said the incident has heightened fears among locals already wary of nighttime movement in the area.
“That bridge is usually busy even at night. For something like this to happen there is very troubling,” he added.
Shortly after the incident, unverified reports began circulating online suggesting that the killing may be linked to cult-related violence.
One such claim, posted by an X account known for tracking gang activities, alleged that the deceased was a prominent figure within the Buccaneers confraternity, also known as the Black Axe Network (BAN).
The post described him as “one of the most influential figures” within the group in Surulere.
However, the police have yet to confirm any such affiliation, maintaining that investigations are still at an early stage.

Cult-related clashes have remained a recurring security concern in parts of Lagos, particularly in densely populated areas like Surulere, Mushin, and Bariga.
These incidents often involve rival groups such as the Buccaneers, Eiye, and Aye confraternities, with disputes typically revolving around territorial control and influence.
Security experts note that while law enforcement agencies have recorded successes in curbing such activities, sporadic outbreaks of violence continue to pose challenges.
A criminologist, Dr. Ibrahim Lawal, said the latest incident underscores the need for sustained intelligence-led policing.
“What we are seeing is the persistence of underground networks that occasionally erupt into violence. The key is proactive disruption, not just reactive enforcement,” he explained.
For many residents of Surulere, the killing has since again brought to the fore concerns about safety, particularly at night.
A commercial driver who plies the Iponri route said the incident may force many to reconsider their movement patterns.
“People will start rushing home earlier now. Nobody wants to be caught in something like that,” he said.
As investigations continue, the police say efforts are underway to identify those responsible and unravel the motive behind the attack.
For now, the circumstances surrounding the killing remain unclear, leaving a mix of fear, speculation, and anticipation in a community eager for answers.
