President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most revered and impactful traditional rulers.
In a statement issued late Sunday night, President Tinubu said the news of the monarch’s death came as a “double pain,” as it coincided with the demise of his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“Oba Adetona was a towering natural ruler who served his people with dignity, panache, class, and an unmistakable sense of duty,” the President stated.
“His over six decades on the throne were marked by unwavering commitment to progress, national unity, and the preservation of Yoruba cultural heritage.”
Ascending the throne in 1960 at just 26 years old, Oba Adetona’s reign spanned 65 transformative years.
He championed the socio-economic development of Ijebuland and earned national acclaim for his leadership and advocacy during periods of political uncertainty.
Reflecting on their personal relationship, President Tinubu noted: “I enjoyed an excellent relationship with Kabiyesi. He was an honest arbiter, confidante, and reliable leader without any guile. I found his company comforting, his wisdom enriching, and his candour empowering.”
The President also lauded the late monarch’s philanthropic legacy and investment in education, particularly through the School of Postgraduate and Research Studies in Governance at Olabisi Onabanjo University, which he described as “an enduring monument to his visionary leadership.”
President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the royal family, Governor Dapo Abiodun, the government and people of Ogun State, and the sons and daughters of Ijebuland.
“May our departed Kabiyesi find eternal rest, and may we be comforted by his legacy of outstanding service,” the statement concluded.Oba Sikiru Adetona passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91.
